For many ordinary gym sessions, water is a perfectly sensible intra-workout drink. Intra-workout electrolytes become more relevant when a session is long, the environment is hot, or you are losing a lot of sweat. There is no single drink or fixed volume that suits everyone: session length, intensity, temperature, body size and individual sweat rate all matter.

The practical goal is simple: arrive reasonably hydrated, drink enough to avoid excessive fluid loss, and do not force down so much fluid that you gain body weight during training. Do You Need Electrolytes During a Workout?

Not always. Sweat contains water and electrolytes, particularly sodium, but losses vary considerably between people. The American College of Sports Medicine therefore recommends an individual fluid-replacement approach rather than one universal schedule.

  • Shorter or moderate indoor sessions: water will often cover the fluid side, especially if you started hydrated and eat a varied diet.
  • Long, hot or high-sweat sessions: a drink containing sodium may be more useful, particularly when large sweat losses are expected.
  • Prolonged endurance work: carbohydrate as well as fluid and electrolytes may be relevant. This is a fuelling question as well as a hydration question.
  • Multiple sessions or a short recovery window: replacing fluid and sodium may need more planning than after one ordinary workout.

This is why “water versus electrolytes” is not a battle with one winner. Match the drink to the session rather than assuming the most complex formula is automatically the best intra-workout hydration drink.

What Do Sodium, Potassium and Magnesium Do?

Electrolytes are charged minerals involved in normal fluid balance, nerve signalling and muscle function. Sodium is the main electrolyte lost in sweat, although the concentration differs between individuals. Potassium and magnesium also have important physiological roles, but that does not mean everyone needs a high-dose multi-electrolyte drink during every workout.

Your normal diet contributes electrolytes too. A product should complement that diet and the demands of the session, not replace regular meals or be treated as a cure for fatigue.

Build a Hydration Strategy Around Your Session

Before Training

Start with normal day-to-day hydration instead of trying to catch up at the gym door. Thirst, recent fluid intake, urine colour and the conditions you will train in can all provide useful context, although no single sign is perfect. If a clinician has told you to restrict fluids or sodium, follow that advice rather than a general sports guide.

During Training

Keep fluid accessible and adjust to the length and heat of the session. There is no need to follow the old page’s fixed 100–200 ml every 15–20 minutes rule. Professional position statements emphasise individual losses because both inadequate replacement and excessive drinking can create problems.

A useful personal check is to compare body mass before and after a representative session, while noting how much you drank and any urine passed. A large fall suggests that losses exceeded intake; finishing heavier indicates that you drank more than you lost. Repeat the check in different conditions rather than treating one result as permanent.

After Training

How urgently you need to replace fluid depends on the size of the loss and how soon you train again. For many gym-goers, normal food and drink over the following hours will contribute both fluid and sodium. Faster, more deliberate replacement may matter more after a long or very sweaty session with limited recovery time.

Do Electrolytes Prevent Muscle Cramps?

They are not a guaranteed cramp-prevention solution. Exercise-associated muscle cramps appear to involve a combination of individual and situational factors, which can include fatigue and altered neuromuscular control as well as fluid or electrolyte issues in some circumstances. A 2022 evidence-based review recommends identifying a person’s own risk factors rather than giving everyone the same instruction to drink more.

If cramps are frequent, severe, happen outside exercise or come with other symptoms, seek medical advice. An intra-workout drink should not be used to mask a recurring problem.

Where Do Amino Acids Fit?

BCAAs — leucine, isoleucine and valine — are three of the nine essential amino acids. EAAs contain all nine. Amino acids and electrolytes serve different purposes, even when they appear in the same drink.

A systematic review in athletes found that BCAA benefits for performance and body composition were negligible, while findings for soreness and endurance were mixed or dependent on the type of training. Total daily protein intake was also poorly reported in many studies. In practical terms, an amino-acid drink does not replace eating enough protein and energy across the day.

A Simple Intra-Workout Hydration Checklist

  • Consider session duration, intensity, temperature and your own sweat rate.
